The Magnanimous is the story of Bennett Carsgrove, a seventeen-year-old half English, half Native American girl who struggles with anxiety during a time when any mental illness labeled someone as simply "crazy." Bennett's father is the inventor of the Magnanimous, a moving hospital that provides health care to George Washington's army during the American Revolution. The bulk of the story takes place at Valley Forge. The action surrounds Bennett, who is trying to teach Ephron Williams -a young man assigned to help her on the Magnanimous -how to keep the hospital running smoothly. Bennett and Ephron encounter threats, violence, and emotional struggles as they find themselves drawn to each other. Bennett battles her anxiety and low self-esteem while striving to accept love and the promise of a future where she's not completely alone.
