The Great Leslie

Leslie Lanier is no "bootlegger" but the chemistry prowess of Monarch High School's "science queen" makes her as socially "suspect" as Jay Gatsby was. Like him, she has a dream of romantic love, which she pins on the school Prom. She is guided socially by Irene Wong, a cheerleader who plays "Nick Carraway" for most of the story. The "Cinderella" transformation of Leslie is so successful that she not only goes to the Prom, but is crowned Queen by Irene, the outgoing monarch.

But this becomes trivial when Leslie wants to play the game of love for "keeps." Soon, she meets the wealthy and well connected mother of the boy she is dating, who is one person that can "nix" her hopes. The other is Irene whose own mother is in the background, urging her daughter to "checkmate" Leslie.
