The Great Leslie
Leslie Lanier is no "bootlegger" but the chemistry prowess of Monarch High School's "science queen" makes her as socially "suspect" as Jay Gatsby was. Like him, she has a dream of romantic love, which she pins on the school Prom. Her "Nick Carraway," is a cheerleader named Irene Wong. Although the two girls are very different, Irene guides Leslie through her first relationship with Henry Applegate, a senior transfer student, Leslie's "Daisy."
But the game changes when Leslie turns 17, which is the age of "consent" in New York state. Will she rise to the challenge of a suddenly adult relationship? Or will she be "checkmated" by someone like Irene, whose own mother is in the background, urging her daughter to do just that?
