What We're Reading: Swoon Staffers

IT'S COLD. Winter took its sweet time hitting up New York, which means it'll probably stay 'til June. Oh well. Why worry about the weather when we have plenty of awesome books to cross off our never-ending TBR lists? Here's what the Swoon Reads Team is currently loving on:

challenger deep cover"I just finished Challenger Deep (a little late to the National Book Award party). This book was gorgeous. Neal Shusterman wove two stories together beautifully and used shifting points of view brilliantly to craft a novel about a tough topic that was personal to him. The writing really invoked feelings that paralleled the story about the realities of mental illness, and it made for a beautiful, almost poetic read." —Kelly M., Associate Manager, Advertising & Promotion

"I'm currently catching up on Thea Harrison's Elder Races series of adult paranormals. Next up is Shadow's End, about Grayden, who has always been one of my favorite characters. After that, I'm probably going to read Blood of My Blood, the third book in Barry Lyga's I Hunt Killers Trilogy. I really loved the first two and can't wait to finish the series. Especially since book two ended with not one but TWO major cliffhangers!" —Holly W., Editor

serafina and the black cloak cover"I just started reading Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty, and I have a feeling already that I'm going to love it. The voice is quirky and adorable, and the Biltmore Estate setting is intriguing. I will even forgive the author for beginning with a rat scene." —Christine M., Senior Production Editor

"I'm reading Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. I know, I know... I'm a bit late to the party, but I finally decided to dig into this series over the holidays and I'm really enjoying it so far! I'm a sucker for YA fantasy and Celaena is just the type of strong, kickass heroine that I like." —Teresa F., Executive Assistant

wolf by wolf cover"Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin. This book WAS. SO. GOOD. It's an alternate history where the Axis powers won the second world war, and the main character joins a motorcycle race across the continents. If she wins, she will meet Hitler, and her mission is to kill him. It's fast paced, has AMAZING characters, and a super-hot leather-jacket-wearing boy named Luka who I LOVE. This is the first in a series (but satisfying on its own) and I can't wait to read anything else this author writes." —Lauren S., Director of Swoon Reads

"I just read Caraval, a debut novel coming out in August from Flatiron Books (so good!) and this weekend I'm cracking open another book coming out in a few months. I'm not trying to book brag here, but right now it's all about tackling 2016 for selling!" —Claire T., National Accounts Manager

ms marvel cover"I just finished the third Ms. Marvel trade (I've been actively trying not to catch up on this series, because I love it so much and want to savor it.) I'm reading Saving Montgomery Sole by Mariko Tamaki now (awesome upcoming novel by the co-creator of This One Summer.) And I'm looking forward to starting Cam Girl by Leah Raeder after that!" —Christine B., Associate Editor

"I am, surprise surprise, reading a romance novel called The Second Love Of My Life by Victoria Walters. It is being published by Headline in the U.K. in April 2016 (not sure if it has a U.S. publisher at the moment) but I managed to get an ARC, which is super exciting. It’s about Rose, a painter who right at the beginning of the book loses her fiancée in an accident. Years later, and she still cannot bring herself to paint. That is until a newcomer, Robert, arrives in Talting for the summer... Can Rose allow herself the chance to love again? It’s beautifully written and an absolutely stonking debut that is giving me all sorts of feels and a whole lot of tears. Remember those feelings you had for One Day by David Nicholls? It’s got that in spades!" —George L., Editorial Assistant, MacUK

the memory book cover"I'm currently reading The Memory Book by Lara Avery. It's not out yet, so I won't give too much away. But it's about an ambitious teenage girl who's on the debate team and a bit of a brain who finds out that she has a completely debilitating disease that will eventually make her lose her memory. So she starts writing her whole life down and addresses it to her future self, in the hopes that she can use the notes to remind herself of her ambitions, her loves, her whole life in case she forgets. It's really touching and incredibly well written so far, and I have the sneaking suspicion that it's going to make me cry a lot later on." —Ashley W., Marketing Manager

nimona cover"I just finished reading Nimona by Noelle Stevenson. What I like about it? NIMONA IS SO KICK-ASS. And even though she signs on to be Lord Blackheart's sidekick, she's NEVER a sideshow act and in fact, she's usually the character leading all the action!" —Anna P., Editorial Assistant

"I just swiped Anna's copy of Nimona, haha." —Emily S., Administrative Assistant to the Publisher
