Swoon Author Devon Taylor: The Soundtrack to THE SOUL KEEPERS
You know when you’re reading a book (or if you’re a writer, writing one) and you just have the perfect song to fit the scene? Yeah, well, that’s me with pretty much every part of every book I read or write. Usually, there’s at least one perfect song that I think embodies the entire story, and I’ll clip together a movie trailer in my head of all the important scenes, set to that song. I know, I have way too much time to daydream. Don’t judge.
Anyway, when it came to The Soul Keepers, there were so many bands and songs that helped inspire me as I was writing that I knew a single song wouldn’t work. I used a line from a song by one of my favorite bands as the epigraph for the book (the entire song actually fit the theme of the book really well), but there was a whole mess of other phenomenal music that worked for different parts of the story. So, my wife and I decided to put together a playlist. We spent weeks curating each song to fit a certain scene or a certain chapter and came out with twenty-two songs that chart the book from beginning to end. I like to think of this as the official playlist for The Soul Keepers. Below, you’ll find the track list along with the chapter that each song corresponds to. And if you’re a Spotify user, then all you have to do is search for “The Soul Keepers” and the playlist is right there at your fingertips. Or in your earbuds. Or your stereo speakers. Whatever. Hope you all enjoy reading (and listening)!
