Swoon Author Chani Lynn Feener: The Book Formerly Known as PRISONER OF GLASS

I love titles. I love how they’re the initial thing—along with covers—that draw people in, and how they hint at the story to come without giving anything too extreme away. But I’ll be honest, when I was writing the book formerly known as, Prisoner of Glass, I could not for the life of me come up with a title. This fact didn’t change after the first draft was written, or even once I’d done my first read through. Knowing that I couldn’t very well release a book untitled, I quickly selected the first thing that came to mind.

When I finally came up with Prisoner of Glass, I was thinking about mirrors, and how Delaney sort of becomes a slave to one, being that on the outside she looks like someone else. I was not thinking about how confusing that probably was, and how even though mirrors break, simply using the word “glass” wasn’t really the best descriptor. I also didn’t take into consideration all of the other wonderful books that have recently come out that also contain the word glass in their titles.

Fortunately, because titling this book had already been such a struggle for me, when the Swoon Reads team told me they wanted us to change it, I wasn’t too heartbroken. In fact, I was excited. I viewed it as a fresh start for my book, and a chance to honor it properly. What was thought up is ten billion times better than the old title that I no longer feel like aliens are going to come after me seeking retribution!

So, without further ado, the new title to my book is: Amid Stars and Darkness.

I absolutely love it. It’ll give people who first pick it up a clear guess at what it’s about, and it’ll become even more apparent why it’s titled that once the book is read! Also, it makes me think of Ruckus and Trystan, the two hot aliens Delaney ends up trapped with. So there’s that. Basically, I’m crazy about this title, and I hope you all love it just as much!

Come back tomorrow for cover voting!
