Read With a Vengeance

When I'm not stomping around Manhattan angrily waiting for winter to finally end, I find settling in with a revenge story warms my heart and soothes all my stress around these finicky temperatures and overcrowded subways. If you've ever wanted to plot an intricate revenge plan with a bulletin board and red yarn, these are for you.

I'm still reeling from all the death and lost appendages at the Belgrave ball in These Ruthless Deeds, but nothing calls for revenge like a high body count. Evelyn is out for blood in the stunning final installment of the These Vicious Masks trilogy, and she'll have to risk everything to stop the wicked Captain Goode from taking more lives. After multiple losses and failures, Evelyn perseveres and faces off against her enemy in a huge, satisfying showdown. And Mr. Kent! Is! Everything!

My favorite quote:

“I’m not going to say go on without me,” Mr. Kent said as we stumbled backward. “I’d honestly prefer we all just died together.”

Oh my god, y'all. This is like Mean Girls if the Plastics were southern cheerleaders who wouldn't bother with a burn book. They'd just bully you to your face. Olivia and Adrienne are best friends, but after a death in Olivia's family, she catches Adrienne sleeping with her boyfriend, and their toxic friendship collapses. Olivia vows revenge. She enlists a fake boyfriend, but when he starts to feel more and more real, Olivia has to decide how far she'll go.

My favorite quote:

"The thought of revenge gives me life. Purpose.

That's what I was missing.

So I get up, and I get on with it. Tight jeans. Loose top. Red lips.

Let's do this."

In the sequel to You Don't Know My Name, Reagan is given the chance to acquire a very particular set of skills by finally training at the Black Angels compound. There's no way she'll be able get revenge on her mother's killer without becoming a Black Angel, but when boy-next-door Luke shows up, Reagan is torn between her duty to avenge her mother and her desire to live a normal life.

My favorite quote:

"Sam has tried to warn me about revenge. She told me that its flame doesn't just destroy your target. It blisters you from the inside, then trickles out, and before you know it, everything you touch is damaged. All that is good burns and blackens. I pretended to agree. But the intense heat cradles me, soothes me somehow. I long for the taste of ash in my mouth."

Do you remember the second season of Gossip Girl, which started with everyone partying in the Hamptons? The Broken Hearts & Revenge series is just like that, only with possibly even more scheming. Gemma's summer takes a turn when her boyfriend dumps her and she's reunited with her ex-best friend, whose life she ruined. Mistaken identity, pool parties, summer romance, and revenge—everything you need while you wait for summer to get here.

My favorite quote:

"Overhead, the first firework shot up into the sky and exploded, sending down a bright-red shower of sparks.

I took a deep breath and then let it out. Strangely, I no longer felt like crying. I only felt the cool, hard certainty that I'd last felt when I was eleven. The clarity that comes from knowing who your enemy is."

Emelina is the daughter of the most powerful queen Ruina has ever known, but she's lost her parents, her sister, and her home. She doesn't have any magic. All that's left is Em's vengeance, and an elaborate plan to murder her royal enemies and destroy their kingdom by posing as Prince Casimir's betrothed. Should be a breeze. But Cas starts melting Em's icy heart. With the lives of her people at stake, falling in love could end in disaster. Read this if your idea of a good time is plotting a murder while dancing at a ball.

My favorite quote:

"Make people fear you, Emelina." Her mother’s words echoed in her head. "Stop worrying about what you don’t have and start focusing on what you do. Make people tremble when they hear your name. Fear is your power."
