Publishing Behind-the-Scenes: Inside the Frankfurt Book Fair
Hello Swoon Readers!
I'm the Executive Director of Subsidiary Rights at Macmillan Children's Publishing Group, which means, among other things, I handle the licensing of all our Swoon books for translation into foreign languages. I'm currently reporting in from Frankfurt, Germany, where thousands are gathering for the world's largest Book Fair!
People come from all over the world and from all corners of the publishing industry to meet and buy and sell books. We talk shop, hear about exciting new projects, and I pitch all our books to editors at foreign publishing houses in hopes they will acquire the rights to translate and sell the book internationally.
Of course, every market is different and not all books will sell abroad, so I hear about what kinds of books are working in all the major territories, and what isn't working quite as well. Sometimes trends are similar from country to country, while other times they are wildly different. In Frankfurt, we come together to share new ideas and new projects with the common goal of publishing the best books we possibly can.
The best part of my job is having relationships with editors from all over the world and being able to share our amazing books with them. Basically I get to talk about good books nonstop for a week. And when they're translated and published in other countries, it's even more exciting. For example, Swoon author Kristen Orlando's books are out now in France and Germany. Check out the covers of each edition below!
Connecting readers around the world... one book at a time. What could be better than that?
