Meet the Author of UNFINISHED, Samantha Hastings!
What inspired you to write Unfinished?
When I read Elizabeth Gaskell’s Wives and Daughters for the first time, I didn’t know that Mrs. Gaskell had died before completing the novel. I eagerly turned the pages and I was concerned as I got closer to the end, that there was too much to wrap up and not enough pages to do it. Then I turned the last page, and I saw the editor’s Concluding Remarks stating that Mrs. Gaskell had died and these were her intentions for the conclusion. I felt cheated. Upset. And I wondered what it would have been like to be reading it serially.
What is your favorite moment in the book?
My favorite moment in the book is when David tells Lucinda that she trod on his toes while dancing. She denies it and says that he should be afraid because she plans to tread on his toes very soon. I love how this little interchange highlights the fun chemistry between them and it shows their strong personalities. Neither of them are willing to back down from a challenge.
If you had a time machine, where would you go and who would you want to visit?
I was a history major in college, so there are so many time periods and people I would love to meet. But if I had to pick one, I would go visit Jane Austen during the Regency period. I would love to ask her about her writing and who was her inspiration for Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. I would love to attend a formal dinner and eat all of the food. Then go to a real ball, wearing a gorgeous gown, of course.
Who would play your characters in a movie?
David Randall: Ansel Elgort
Lucinda Leavitt: Kaya Scodelario
Clara Hardin: Lily James
Persephone Merritt: Natalia Dyer
Lord Alfred Adlington: Tom Holland
What makes you swoon?
My husband, hot movie theatre popcorn, and a great romantic read in a bubble bath.
