Meet the Author of LET'S TALK ABOUT LOVE, Claire Kann!
Meet the first of four wonderful new authors joining the Swoon Reads family, Claire Kann! We were blown away by her unique and wonderfully voice-y story of an asexual girl who has given up on finding love (until love finds her!) in Let's Talk About Love. Ace representation FTW!
Where did the idea for Let's Talk About Love come from?
The scene: Christmas 2015.
The problem: An intense reading and writing slump to end all slumps.
The solution: A writing pact made with a friend.
My critique partner and I challenged each other to write and submit a book to Swoon Reads before or on the January 31st deadline*. After flailing for a week, I sat down and scrolled through my endless list of ideas/WIPs. Nothing there moved me to start writing so I opened a blank word document, stared at the blinking cursor and began to free write about my writer's block. Within ten minutes I realized my problem: I wanted to write the kind of romance I could see myself in, the kind where I had to put a small bit of my soul into** so I could say proudly, "This is mine. This is a book I wrote."

Alice ripped herself from a previously unknown squishy part hidden deep inside of my steel trap heart. Later, along came Takumi with the entire scene from Chapter 2. And finally, I reached peak writer life: I couldn’t stop daydreaming about my cutie code children. Almost every day while commuting to work, I’d turn on my voice recorder to take notes about scenes and/or snippets of conversations between them that randomly popped into my head***. They felt so real to me—I knew I had to finish the book.
And I did... a little over a week after our deadline.****
*Spoiler Alert: Technically, I failed.
**I know what you're thinking: I'm like one step away from making a Horcrux. Worry not! For I am a Hufflepuff.
***So. Many. Bonus. Scenes.
****Yes, I really wrote the book in under forty days. Scouts honor!
Your main character Alice is a major fangirl. What do you fangirl over?
Music! I’m the kind of person who will listen to a song on repeat until I’m absolutely sick of it but will keep going anyway because I’m not done feeling all the feelings. Thanks to my dad, I grew up listening to just about everything (and am the Slayer of Music Trivia). I spent my teen years cutting my teeth in the MCRmy and the Despair Faction. Now, I am always on the prowl for that next amazing song/artist that will wreck my life.
Elsewhere on the internet, I am known as the Trash Queen of smooth three to five-part harmonies (à la boy bands).
Alice loves things that are cute. What do you find cute?
- CATS. I love all things feline.
- Themed coffee mugs (My Instagram is full of them).
- Singing stuffed animals—the kind you can get during the Valentine’s or Christmas seasons.
- Cubone and Clefairy (PokemonGo is my life now).
- Tiny animals like the flapjack octopus and sugar gliders.
Who would play your characters in a movie?
I love this question (but really, what writer doesn’t?)
- Alice: I’d have to go with an unknown actress who would hopefully look similar to YouTuber Kxt Bonifacio.
- Takumi: Haruma Miura
- Feenie: Eliza Taylor
- Ryan: Martin Escudero
- TJ: Wentworth Miller (If I had access to a time machine)
- Essie: Nicole Beharie
What makes you swoon?
(Besides making bulleted lists?)
My ships! I love reading about (or seeing) other people in love.
- Ronan and Adam from The Raven Cycle
- Jang Jae-yeol and Ji Hae-soo from It’s Okay That’s Love (those two paired with the song by Chen from the OST had me deep in my feelings for weeks...)
- Clarke and Lexa from The 100
- Cath and Levi from Fangirl
- Mirai and Akihito from Kyoukai no Kanata
