What inspired you to write This Is How We Fall Apart?
Honestly, all these superhero movies that have been coming out! I really wanted to write a book in which the characters have all sorts of superpowers, but instead of them being heroes, society hates them and there’s this uncertainty of where exactly they belong. It’s been really fun discovering how the characters react differently to their given situations and seeing how it changes their personality and perception of right and wrong. I adore gray areas and wanted to incorporate that into this work. And five or six years later, here we are!
What is your favorite moment in the book?
There are a few moments I hold close to my heart, but I think the scene after
the cave-in, when Lai and Jay open up to each other for the first time to talk
about their pasts and fears, takes the gold for me. (Can I add a second one?
I’m totally going to add a second one.) For very different reasons, I also love
the scene where Lai and Erik play cards to get information from each other. I
think their personalities really come through here, and it was just such a fun
scene to write!
characters all have amazing powers. If you could choose a superpower, which
would you choose?
I want to say something cool like the power to change into any animal or to view any given moment in time. But practically speaking, and after living in Tokyo (the second largest city in the world by land mass, but the largest in the world by population!), I’d really love the power to teleport anywhere in the world. It takes so long to get anywhere within the city from where I live, and last trains would never be a worry again! (Let’s not talk about the number of times I’ve had to stay the night at a McDonald’s until first trains started running.) Plus, I could travel anywhere, anytime I want, without the time, cost, or hassle of planes or trains, and I could be home instantly after an exhausting day at work! Not to mention it’d be amazing to be able to visit my mom anytime I wanted.
Who would play your characters in a movie?
This is actually a really hard question for me! I don’t watch TV or many movies, and whenever I do, the actors are usually adults. So I enlisted my friends’ help and we did some research. I think Natalia Dyer would make an absolutely amazing Lai, and I would love Mackenyu as Jay (have you SEEN him in Chihayafuru? So swoonworthy!). I think either Sydney Park or Alisha Boe would be a kickass Al, and it’d be great to see Brandon Flynn as Erik. And oh man, I would DIE if Park Shin-hye played Fiona; she is a goddess among mortals and I may or may not have the biggest crush on her.
What makes you swoon?
So many things! Amazing with-you-to-the-end-of-the-world friendships. Cute
nerdy boys who respect a girl’s independence. Architecture. A delicious cup of coffee.
Chocolate. Anything involving sweets, really. And space! (Is it weird to swoon
so much over inanimate objects?)
