Judging a Cover by Its Book: Choose the Cover Direction for SMALL TOWN HEARTS
Cover voting is now closed. Thanks for all your help!
Well, hello there, Swooners!
We are so incredibly excited to share the three shiny cover options for Lillie Vale's recently renamed debut novel, Small Town Hearts! Here's a summary in case you're in need of a refresher of this dreamy debut:
Babe Vogel has spent her whole life in the postcard-perfect small coastal town of Oar’s Rest, Maine. She works at the local coffee shop the Busy Bean, lives in a lighthouse, and has a tight group of friends she’s known since birth.
When NYC-based artist Levi Keller turns up at the Busy Bean, Babe can immediately tell he’s from “out of town.” Levi is determined to live like a hermit and remain a mystery to the Oar’s Rest natives, but Babe won’t allow it. She takes Levi under her wing and shows him how the Maine locals live.
But as the season pass and Babe and Levi’s friendship becomes something more, they both have to figure out if they can balance small-town living with big city dreams.
Swoon designer Katie K. (a recent and very welcome addition to the Swoon team!) has compiled three fabulous cover directions for you to choose from, and has shared some thoughts about her inspiration behind each one. Remember, the below images aren't necessarily final. These are just directions, so there will most likely be some tweaks made before the book hits the shelves. This image just feels like those hazy summer days... Oar's Rest is such a big part of Babe's identity, we wanted a scene that hinted at her summer of adventure there!
Busy's also plays a huge role in Babe's life. So much of her story takes place here. We wanted a cozy scene that sported some of those amazing baked goods that Babe creates. And coffee! Never enough coffee. For Final: We'd reshoot those coffee beans so that they're actually lying in a heart.
Son of a beach! A simple graphic cover, to mimic Oar's Rest's small-town feel. Biking, sketching, and summer vibes fill this book and this is a good representation of that. For Final: We'll redraw those lines to give them more texture, to hint at the ebb and flow of the tides at the beach. The bike will be refined, and drawn so that the lines are consistent.
