Judging a Cover by Its Book: Choose the Cover Direction for THE SECRET RECIPE FOR MOVING ON
Cover voting is now closed. Thanks for all your help!
Hey there, Swooners!
We are incredibly excited to show you all the proposed cover directions for Karen Bischer's debut novel, The Secret Recipe for Moving On! In case you're in need of a refresher, here's a little more info about it:
Home economics is supposed to be an easy A for Ellie Agresti, but, much like an imperfect souffle, her plans collapse epically when she's dumped by her boyfriend, Hunter. Now Ellie has to mend her broken heart while watching Hunter fawn all over his new girlfriend, Brynn, in class. To make matters worse, Ellie is partnered with four of the biggest misfit guys in school: Jeremy, the loudmouth with temper issues; Isaiah, the solemn, silent horse racing obsessive; Andrew, who can't take rejection; and Luke, the giant, tattooed stunt biker.
Over the course of a semester, Ellie works to overcome her feelings for Hunter, as well as deeper insecurities that have plagued her since middle school. As the weeks go by, she's surprised to find friendships in unexpected places... and sparks flying with the last guy she'd expect.
Swoon designer extraordinaire Trisha P. has cooked up four awesome cover options for you to choose from and has also shared some thoughts about the inspiration behind each. Remember, the below images aren't necessarily final. These are just directions, so there will most likely be some tweaks made before the book hits the shelves. Messy Ingredients Cover
Home Ec class gets messy for Ellie and her teammates in more ways than one. This cover references the class competition with a little more action and movement.
For final: I’ll be retouching the whisk in photoshop to better integrate it into the cover, and the title will be better integrated with the ingredients in the background.
Out of the Frying Pan Cover
This cover brings Ellie front and center. The hand drawn elements and bright colors speak to the humor and lightheartedness of the story.
For final: I may play with the placement and details of the title type a little more.
Rain and Utensils Cover
This cover references the challenges raining down on Ellie via her breakup with Hunter and the messiness of Home Ec class. The raindrops also loop in Ellie’s interest in meteorology throughout the story.
For final: This one is pretty close, but I’ll likely refine the title type and redraw some of the rain drops for more variation.
There’s a lot of focus on kitchen utensils throughout the story. This option keeps that reference simple and bold with some fun colors to boot.
For final: The lettering will be tightened up, and I may add some extra splatters of batter, either in the background or on the letters, to up the messiness factor.
