What's up, Swooners?
We are so pumped for you to finally see the three amazing cover options for the recently renamed Rules We're Meant to Break! A high school senior falls for the school basketball star—even though it breaks all her strict anti-attachment rules—in this sweet contemporary debut from Natalie Williamson. In case you need a reminder, here's the synopsis:
Amber lives by strict rules to survive her mother’s love life: Always keep your eyes on the horizon and never get close to anyone connected to Mom's boyfriends.
But after they move in with Kevin, the latest of her mom's “soulmates,” the rules become increasingly difficult to follow. Kevin’s daughter, Cammie, keeps acting like Amber’s friend, even though she’s definitely not. And Jordan—star basketball player, hottest boy in school, and Cammie's best friend—keeps showing up at the most inconvenient moments.
Amber has reasons for every one of her rules, and following them is the only way to protect her heart when her mom inevitably moves on. But as she spends more time with Kevin, his daughter, and especially Jordan, she starts to wonder if the rules might be worth breaking this time.
Swoon designer Katie K. took on this one and created three fantastic cover directions for you to choose from, and has supplied some thoughts about her inspiration behind each one. Remember, the below images aren't necessarily final. These are just directions, so there will most likely be some tweaks made before the book hits the shelves. If an organized desk doesn't make you giddy... I don't know what will. This cover plays on Amber's want of Rules. Everything is tidy... everything is as it should be... until...
For Final: The title will be re-lettered so that it's a bit more refined and clean!
I love the hard and fast rules that Amber has set, in these very broad terms. The idea of having a faceless guy here was important, because Amber doesn't even allow herself to look deeper... until...
For Final: This is pretty close—we'll work on making that title really readable, maybe adding a tint of color to our balloons!
This is Amber's journey, and what I love about this cover is that she is centerstage, bold, and traveling her path... literally! The rules, the guy, they'll be along the way but it's truly up to her to decide how much or little she'll allow them in.
For Final: The characters will be re-drawn in a similar manner, refining the lines so that they pop!
