Judging a Cover by Its Book: Choose the Cover Direction for THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF US

Cover voting is now closed. Thanks for all your help!

Well, hello there, Swooners!

We are so incredibly excited to share the three shiny cover options for Katy Upperman's new book, The Impossibility of Us! In case you missed yesterday's announcement post, here's a little more info about it:

"The last thing Elise wants is to start her senior year in a new town. But after her brother’s death in Afghanistan, she and her mother move from San Francisco to a sleepy coastal village.

When Elise meets Mati, they quickly discover how much they have in common. Mati is new to town too, visiting the U.S. with his family. Over the course of the summer, their relationship begins to blossom, and what starts out as a friendship becomes so much more.

But as Elise and Mati grow closer, her family becomes more and more uncomfortable with their relationship, and their concerns all center on one fact—Mati is Afghan.

How brave can you be when your relationship is questioned by everyone you love?"

Swoon designers Liz D. and Becca S. put their heads together to come up with three fabulous cover directions for you to choose from, and Liz has shared some thoughts about their inspiration behind each one. Remember, the below images aren't necessarily final. These are just directions, so there will most likely be some tweaks made before the book hits the shelves. (Want to see how a cover goes from concept to final? Click here.)

But first, a note from Liz D.:

I'm especially excited to share these directions for The Impossibility of Us with you because we did a photoshoot for them! Look how cute and perfect these models are! Usually we wouldn't set up a shoot until after the voting because usually we give you photo options, graphic options, illustrated options—we have to wait to see what wins to know if we need a shoot. But, for The Impossibility of Us we didn't want to show you any options that weren't photographic. We've talked before about how important representation is, both in the story and on the cover. This is a great story and we want to make sure the cover represents it.

To view enlarged images, right click the image to view it in a new tab. Cover voting will close at noon EST on Friday, September 15.

Beach Cover

Mati and Elise meet on the beach and spend a lot of time there so of course we need a beach scene! I love Mati's smile and Elise's hand on his face in this photo. There's a beautiful sunset behind them, and the fun type matches the sweetness of the scene.

Dandelions Cover

We love the scene where Mati and Elise make a wish on a dandelion so we had to have a photographic version as well! We went closer on Mati and Elise and used a beautiful brush type for the title.

Painted Cover

I love mixing photos and illustrations so when I found these beautiful painted dandelions I had to use them. I love Mati's smile in this photo, too, and how Mati and Elise aren't touching but clearly like each other sooo much.

The beach cover caught my eye straight away, though I think as someone has mentioned the trainers/shoes doesn't fit as well (probably should be barefoot), but other than that it's my personal favourite. The colours are great :-)

This is impossible! They all look great. But I eventually chose the first one. I love the color combination.

I voted for the Dandelion - so beautiful! I liked them all, and may have voted for the beach cover if they were barefoot. I couldn't buy that they were standing in the surf with her cute little leather shoes. But I love the beach and the hand-drawn hearts on that one!

Oh, interesting point about the shoes -- I hadn't thought of that! I love the hand drawn doodles, too. :-) And I agree -- the Dandelion cover is so beautiful! Thanks for voting!

I like all the covers in different ways.

I love the Dandelions cover as it portrays a chemistry between the two people on the cover. I also love the fact that the cover is a scene from within the book.

I also quite love the Beach cover as again its based on a scene from the book where the two main characters first ever meet. There's also a romantic tenderness to the way Elise's hand it stroking/touching Mati's face.

Once again the Painted cover uses the dandelion theme and it is rather different to other covers about at the moment. I'm not keen on the female character, Elise's stance on this cover.

So to sum up I really, really love the Dandelion cover, though the Beach cover is a fairly close second!

The beach cover is definitely whimsical and romantic -- which is totally in keeping with the tone of the story. :-) Thanks so much for voting, Pamela!
