Judging a Cover by Its Book: Choose the Cover Direction for THE BOYFRIEND BRACKET

Cover voting is now closed. Thanks for all your help!

Hey there, Swooners!

We are incredibly excited to show you all the proposed cover directions for Kate Evangelista's new book, The Boyfriend Bracket! In case you missed Friday's announcement post, here's a little more info about it:

"Stella has had a hopeless crush on Will, her older brother's best friend FOREVER, but now that Cam and Will have graduated and are going off to college, this year is her chance to really strike out on her own. Without her overprotective brother and his sidekick around to distract her, she can focus on having all the typical high school experiences that she's always dreamed of—starting with finding a boyfriend! With the help of her best friend Franklin, she comes up with the perfect plan to have a boyfriend by Christmas: The Boyfriend Bracket.

Or it seems like the perfect plan... right up until Will starts showing up again. How is she supposed to find the perfect boyfriend when none of her dates measure up to the one boy she can never have?"

Swoon designer extraordinaire Liz D. has cooked up five awesome cover options for you to choose from and has also shared some thoughts about her inspiration behind each. Remember, the below images aren't necessarily final. These are just directions, so there will most likely be some tweaks made before the book hits the shelves. (Want to see how a cover goes from concept to final? Click here.)

Rainbow Bracket Cover

While most of these directions include some nod to the fun title and concept, this direction really focuses on the bracket itself, with the blanks ready to be filled in with names and the illustrations of the eight boys ghosted in the background. We are also really happy with this type treatment, as the bright yellow type feels very fun in a graphic novel superhero way and is our subtle callout to Will's webcomic.

With this direction we really wanted to put our main character Stella front and center, while the background pulls in that fun bracket element. And we chose a large handwritten type as a callback to the author's earlier Swoon Reads novels, which also featured handwritten title treatments.

Pink and Gold Cover

The defining idea behind this direction is the illustrations of the eight boys once again ghosted in the background. These illustrations add a great texture to the grey background, which was chosen specifically so that the glittery gold and pink would really pop. The heart details are based on the rating system that they use in the book, while the cute mix of handwriting and classic san-serif font in the title is a nod to the high school setting.

Glittery Hearts Cover

With this cover it's all about the glitter. The actual bracket in the book is highly decorated with glitter and other sparkly things, so we wanted to reflect that in our designs. We also featured eight hearts for our eight potential boyfriends. And for the final touch, we had to include our super cute Filipino main character.

TBB Silhouette

Silhouette Cover

The silhouettes on this cover direction symbolize the uncertainty of which boy Stella will actually end up with. We also really loved the classic romance pose (and the fact that she's wearing Chucks!). And for the background color, we chose millennial pink, which is Stella's signature color.
