Ask an Editor: How Do I Know When My Book is Ready to Be Uploaded to Swoon Reads?

This is a GREAT question, and one that I hope many of you are contemplating.

Fortunately, there is a fairly simple answer. Just ask yourself this question:

Do I know what I need to do to make my book better?

If the answer is yes, then your manuscript is NOT ready to be uploaded. If you know what needs to be done to fix your work, make those changes first, THEN upload it to Swoon Reads.

Which is not to say that Swoon Reads isn’t a great place for feedback on your novel. The ratings and comments are one of the best things about the site. We love the idea that even if you aren’t chosen for publication, you can still beta test your book and get suggestions for revisions and edits!

But the key phrase there is “beta” testing. Before you post your masterpiece on Swoon Reads, have someone else take a look at it first to point out any major flaws. These “alpha” readers are an amazing resource and can easily be the difference between a book that suffers from too many flaws for us to acquire it, despite its vast potential, and a book that is ready for me to dig in and get to work.

And catching any big things before you post will make the feedback you get from the site more valuable. This way readers can focus on the story and the characters and not be distracted by things like the fact that your main character’s name changes in the middle of the novel or that you have a whole plot line over here that trickles out and goes nowhere.

Basically, when you reach the point where you just don’t know what else to do, it’s the best that you are going to be able to make it without professional help (and honestly you are kind of sick and tired of looking at it), then that’s when you are ready to share it with us!
