Announcing THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF US by Katy Upperman!
Friends! I have awesome news—news I’ve been waiting forever to share…
I have a second Swoon Reads book coming out next summer, and I could not be more excited!
The Impossibility of Us is the story of Elise and Mati, two teens who meet on the beach, forge a strong bond, and long to be together despite cultural and religious differences, plus a lot of pushback from their families. Here’s the official description:
We’re motionless, watching each other, breathing in tandem.
Enchanted… that’s the only word that comes close to encompassing how I feel—how he makes me feel.
The last thing Elise wants is to start her senior year in a new town. But after her brother’s death in Afghanistan, she and her mother move from San Francisco to a sleepy coastal village to be closer to Elise’s sister-in-law and niece.
When Elise meets Mati during a beachside walk, they quickly discover how much they have in common. Mati is new to town, too, visiting the U.S. with his family. Over the course of the summer, their relationship begins to blossom, and what starts out as a friendship becomes so much more.
But as Elise and Mati grow closer, her family becomes more and more uncomfortable with their relationship, and their concerns all center on one fact—Mati is Afghan.
How brave can you be when your relationship is questioned by everyone you love?
I wrote The Impossibility of Us as a National Novel Writing Month project back in 2014, and it’s a story that’s dear to my heart for a lot of reasons. When I began, my goal was to write a contemporary, realistic story that felt like a fairytale, and The Impossibility of Us is the result. It’s a project that involved a lot of eye-opening research, it was my first real foray into verse (Mati’s point-of-view chapters are journal entries written in verse), and its main characters have the biggest hearts, and they aren’t afraid to stand up for what they believe.
I hope you’ll become as fond of Elise and Mati as I am, and I hope you’ll return tomorrow morning for cover voting!
