And the winning cover for BEWARE THE NIGHT is...
I first discovered Swoon Reads with Katy Upperman’s
cover voting for Kissing Max Holden
and I remember thinking it was the coolest thing ever (and quite smart). Why wouldn’t publishers get cover input from
readers? Also, the designs were amazing. Yeah, I wanted in on that.
Not too long after, I uploaded BEWARE THE NIGHT (formerly, THE OFFERING) to the Swoon Reads website. Somehow all the stars aligned because, lucky me, it was chosen! I’m not at all embarrassed to admit that even before I received my first edit letter, I was daydreaming about cover voting.
I don’t know any authors who don’t both dread and revel in the idea of cover art. On one hand, you fully trust the people you’ve handed your book-baby over to. But, on the other hand, you just never know, right? What if it’s not perfect? What if it’s not what you envisioned? What if… the hundreds of things that could possibly go wrong go wrong? Yeah, cover art is a big deal.
Suffice it to say that when Kat casually mentioned I’d be getting cover concepts “soon”, I refreshed my browser a lot. Like, a lot, a lot. Of course, when the email finally arrived, I was out of the house. Somehow, I harnessed the will power to wait until I got home to open it so I could fully take in the sketches on a large screen. And, well, you saw them! I was all speechless and happy-tears (and I’m NOT even a happy crier.)
Elen Winata’s illustrations blew me away and these were only the black and white sketches! It was my little ‘ole story—all of the tiny details and symbols that, when added up, tie my story together—right there before me and so, so gorgeous! Beyond anything my imagination could have ever cooked up. And not just one but three unique versions of it!
I’d have been thrilled with *any* of the designs. Truly. However, you all voted, and one cover concept won by a pretty large margin. So, here it is, the winning cover sketch for BEWARE THE NIGHT:
Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone for taking the time to vote for this cover—you all are the bee’s knees! I can’t wait to see what magic Elen spins with the final version (yep, I’m already daydreaming of it…) and I definitely can’t wait to share it with you all!
