Here’s Your Chance to Win an Advance Copy to Add to Your To-Read List!

Hello Swoon Readers,

We are slogging through the Dog Days of Summer here in NYC. It’s hot and humid and although it is easy to complain, it’s those fun final days of summer – where you try to squeeze in just one more day at the beach, one more ice cream cone, one more fun summer re-read before the barrage of fall books descends upon us!

Last week Publisher’s Weekly dropped their Fall 2015 preview and there is no shortage of must-reads on this list from debut authors and veterans. My list as it stands now is somewhere around 27 titles – not counting any books that I work on here at Swoon/Macmillan. Needless to say, my shelves will be overflowing even further – and I couldn’t be more excited!

I wanted to pull out one title though, tell you about it and a little about why I love it. Before I launch into this post I just have to be 100% clear: this is a book that is published by the company I work for, so do with that what you will. The perk is that because I work with this book, I can offer three lucky people a free advanced reader’s copy (details at the end of this post)!

23310751So here we go. In October 2015 Macmillan is publishing a book called First & Then. It’s a debut contemporary novel for teenagers written by Emma Mills, who is a vlogger and has a YouTube channel called How to Adult. Macmillan deftly describes her book as Pride and Prejudice meets Friday Night Lights – so what’s not to love, right? What are you waiting for?! Go check it out!

Real talk here, in this industry we have to come up with a lot of spiffy little handles to help sell these books (all books have them, all sales people use them!). The handles are great, and they aren’t inaccurate, but in the case of First & Then I feel like there is so much more. This book is full of heart, the main character Devon is – much like all of us were in high school – so over it and yet so uncertain about what the future holds. She has an awesome sense of humor and sarcasm. She happens to have a male best friend, Cas, who seems to be totally hot – and also totally oblivious. Devon goes to football games, because that’s what you do in this town – not because she’s a big football fan, at all.

The book starts just after her younger cousin Foster has moved in with her family (reasons to be revealed) and while Foster is sort of the opposite of the cool kid in school, he happens to have one very particular skill that the football team happens to be looking for. Because of this, the Football superstar Ezra ends up spending a lot of time around Devon. So Ezra has the aloof, slightly arrogant Mr. Darcy thing happening – which is of course for Devon lame and unattractive – while we, the readers, know the truth of the matter, it somehow makes him pretty darn charming.

So there you have it, I don’t want to give too much away, because I want you to actually go out and read the thing, not just read my book report of it here. I know there is a lot coming out this fall and that’s on top of all the other books it your to-read pile (So. Many!). But add this to your list, believe me – you won’t regret it. Also, get a load of that cover – isn’t it gorgeous?

What is coming out this fall that you are totally excited about? Sound off below for a chance to win an ARC of First & Then!
