Lillie Vale

Lillie Vale, upon discovering she could not be one of Santa’s elves or attend Hogwarts, decided to become a writer to create a little magic of her own. Enjoying the romantic and eerie in equal measure, she’s probably always writing a book where the main characters kiss or kill.

Born in Mumbai, she has lived in many U.S. states, and now resides in an Indiana college town where the corn whispers and no one has a clue that she is actually the long-lost caps lock queen.

She can be reached on Twitter @LillieLabyrinth and Instagram @labyrinthspine. Small Town Hearts is her debut novel.

Swoon Author Lillie Vale: The Importance of Strong, Complicated Friendships in YA

Hey, Swooners! Today I’m going to be talking to you about one of my favorite topics: friendship in YA. Specifically intense, nuanced female friendships and why it was important for me to show in Small Town Hearts! With aspirational #squadgoals and girl squads popularized in the last few years, we’re starting to see TV, film, and literature start to examine … Read More

Swoon Author Lillie Vale: Refilling the Creative Well

“I should really be doing more. I should bang out another chapter today. Or revise another WIP. Or do some writing sprints.”*turns on Netflix instead*“Well, maybe after this one episode.”Ha. It’s never just “one” episode.Gosh, that’s a really good way to feel guilty, isn’t it? Why do our writer brains always come down on us so hard for taking some … Read More

Swoon Author Lillie Vale's Editing Update: Meeting My Book for the First Time (Again)

Revising is a very different beast than drafting. And by that I don’t mean putting a comma here, a semicolon there, re-evaluating copious use of em-dashes… but grabbing the dragon by the horns and wrangling all the monstrous pieces into something resembling a polished novel. Powered by Giphy Small Town Hearts was the first time I actually ripped a book … Read More

Swoon Author Lillie Vale's First Draft Report: When a Place Becomes a Person

When it comes to Small Town Hearts and its cozy, seaside Maine village of Oar’s Rest, the one statement I hear heads and shoulders above the rest is: “I want to move there!”And variations, such as:“Is this a real place?”“Oar’s Rest feels like a character in itself!”“Did you come up with the town first or the characters?” Powered by Giphy … Read More

And the winning cover for SMALL TOWN HEARTS is...

Every writer spends so much time perfecting the bones and guts of their book that they’re super anxious/excited/over the moon about seeing the fancy clothes the book will be dressed up in! I wasn’t any different. And yet I wasn’t ready for the thrill that went through me when I saw the subject of my newest email: Covers for cover … Read More
